The story
Six years in the ICU changed the question.
Catherine spent six years as a registered nurse in the Medical ICU at the Roudebush VA. Intensive care teaches one lesson over and over: what the end of the road looks like when causes go untreated for decades. The heart failure had a twenty-year runway. The kidneys did not fail overnight. Almost nothing in that unit was sudden.
The move into functional and integrative medicine was deliberate. She saw the gap in care those patients had fallen through, and she became a nurse practitioner to close it: to reach people while their outcomes are still preventable, where the question is not "how do we stabilize this" but "why is this happening at all."
