Functional Medicine Evaluation

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is an innovative approach to treating the root cause of complex illnesses. It involves a system-based, multi-dimensional treatment strategy that allows us to identify and address the source of a disorder. It calls for a holistic method that aims to identify and treat all of a patient’s illnesses and the factors causing them.

Functional medicine advocates that one illness can have multiple causes, and in order to treat it, all these causes need to be addressed. An example of such an illness is depression. Depression is now known to be caused by many different factors involving multiple systems of the body. It can affect physical, mental, and emotional aspects of well-being and hence they all need to be addressed.

What is a Functional Medicine Evaluation?

At Healing Advanced Solutions, we perform a complete functional medical evaluation on our patients. A functional medicine evaluation entails a thorough, detailed history taking and physical examination. It may also include some baseline investigations ordered by our functional medicine practitioner, Catherine, depending upon your complaint and symptom.

History and Physical Examination

During this evaluation at Healing Advanced Solutions, you will find that we listen to all your health complaints intently whilst also asking questions that evaluate major areas of health. We start by asking about your symptoms, their triggers, any alleviating factors, and the order they occurred in. Other questions are usually centered around environmental exposure, allergies, antibiotic use, familial conditions, etc. This detailed questionnaire is fortified by a basic physical examination which helps uncover signs of deficiencies or an excess of vitamins and minerals in the body. Such signs are quite helpful during the diagnostic stage.

Lab Investigations

As previously mentioned, we also supplement the findings with lab investigation results and imaging studies. These investigations cover baseline blood workup which usually includes, electrolyte levels, kidney function tests, liver function tests, and complete blood count. Additionally, if we feel that your symptoms are pointing towards a specific cause, we may order a detailed assay. For example, some conditions require genetic testing whilst others may require a hormonal assessment. If your symptoms seem to be due to an autoimmune disease, then we may order immune function tests. Some other tests include neurotransmitter testing, biomarkers for certain ailments, allergy testing and imaging studies.

The Functional Medicine Approach to Treatment

Using the information obtained through history, physical examination and lab investigations, we tailor a custom treatment plan that addresses the root cause of our patient’s health issues. During treatment, we utilize a combination of herbal, homeopathic, and pharmaceutical (if needed) medications and supplements. Additionally, lifestyle and dietary modifications are also advised. The foundation of our treatment is based on restoring the body to its natural function and maintaining homeostasis that eventually leads to the restoration of natural balance and alleviation of diseases.
