Mood Disorders — Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia

What are Neurotransmitters?

Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers in the nervous system that transport information from one neuron to the other. Maintaining optimal health requires balanced neurotransmitter levels. Imbalances can over or under-stimulate the brain and body, resulting in neurological and/or mood disorders. Hence, these neurotransmitters can impact our physical as well as mental well-being.

At Healing Advanced Solutions, we provide essential neurotransmitter testing that helps us diagnose mood disorders like depression, insomnia, and anxiety.

Neurotransmitters Available for Testing

Some of the neurotransmitters that are available for testing at our clinic include:

  • Serotonin
  • Dopamine
  • Glutamate
  • GABA
  • Histamine
  • PEA
  • Epinephrine
  • Norepinephrine
  • Cortisol

How Do You Get Tested for Neurotransmitter Levels?

A simple urine or saliva specimen is used for neurotransmitter testing. This sample can be collected in our clinic or in the privacy of your own home and returned to the lab via postal service.

Based on the interpretation of the test results and the neurotransmitter imbalances detected, and the clinical symptoms experienced by our patient, we develop a tailored treatment plan. The test findings are used to guide the selection of appropriate medication or supplements to provide a solution for depression, anxiety, and a variety of other mental health conditions.

The Four Most Important Neurotransmitters in Mood Disorders

To maintain mood stability, you need a mix of inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters. While many neurotransmitters are involved, four of the most significant ones are as follows.

  • Serotonin – Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that promotes feelings of self-worth and happiness. Depression and other mood disorders are frequently caused by low serotonin levels. If a patient’s serotonin levels are determined to be low after being tested in our laboratory, natural herbal supplements along with lifestyle modifications are suggested to enhance its levels.

  • GABA – When GABA levels are excessively high, you may feel lethargic. Anxiety, panic attacks, and irritation occur when it is too low. Treatments exist which can help suppress or supplement the effects of GABA on the body and mind.

  • Dopamine  – Dopamine is vital for stimulating reward and pleasure areas in the brain. Because stress has a negative impact on dopamine production, our treatment for low dopamine levels is based on controlling the stress hormone cortisol which can help protect dopamine and enhance mood. We also treat low dopamine levels by supporting it with various supplements, to help restore a natural balance.

  • Norepinephrine – Norepinephrine is a hormone that is produced in stressful situations. The high amount of norepinephrine can cause apathy and fatigue. Our treatment for high norepinephrine levels includes adrenal fatigue treatment and supplementation.

Some Neurotransmitters Tested for Anxiety, Depression, and Insomnia

Anxiety Disorders

The neurotransmitter imbalances that are often associated with mood disorders like anxiety frequently involve serotonin, histamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and glutamate.

Imbalances in glutamate are diagnostic for a panic attack.

Depression

The neurotransmitters that are tested in depression include dopamine, serotonin, glutamate, epinephrine, and norepinephrine.

Insomnia

Neurotransmitters like GABA, histamine, glutamate, dopamine, and serotonin are linked to sleep disturbances and insomnia.
