Inflammation

What Is Inflammation?

Inflammation is a protective response of the body to injury, disease, or irritation of any tissue. It is characterized by redness, swelling, pain, and warmth in the affected part. Even though acute inflammation is a protective response, it sometimes becomes uncontrollable and harmful to the body, also known as chronic inflammation.

How We Test for Inflammation

Whenever inflammation occurs in any part of the body, certain extra proteins are released from the site of inflammation and released into the bloodstream. These are known as biomarkers of inflammation. At Healing Advanced Solutions, we use biomarker testing in order to measure the level and severity of inflammation.

Some of the blood tests we perform include:

  • ESR Blood Test (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate)

An erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) test evaluates how quickly erythrocytes (red blood cells) settle at the bottom of a test tube containing a blood sample. Red blood cells normally settle relatively slowly. However, a faster than normal rate of sedimentation would indicate that there is inflammation in the body.

  • CRP Blood Test (C-Reactive Protein)

C reactive protein blood test measures the level of c-reactive protein in your bloodstream. C-reactive proteins are proteins produced by the liver in response to inflammation. So, whenever any patient is positive for C reactive protein in their serum, it indicates inflammation in the body.

  • Other Blood Tests

We also perform other blood tests including a complete blood count, to measure the levels of different blood cells. Pro-calcitonin, calprotectin, and fibrinogen are some other proteins that increase in the blood after inflammation.

How We Treat Inflammation

Our treatment is based on a non-pharmaceutical approach to treating the inflammation and pain in the body.

This includes:

  • Herbal Supplements – Supplements that fight inflammation include a number of anti-inflammatory active ingredients including curcumin, fish oil, ginger, resveratrol, spirulina, vitamin D, bromelain, green tea extract, and more.

  • Dietary Modification – We investigate our patients dietary choices and suggest modifications that can help reduce inflammation in specific areas of the body. Additionally, we encourage dietary actions that activate detoxing pathways to help naturally heal the body.

  • Lifestyle Management – Lifestyle modifications can also help resolve inflammatory conditions and avoid them in the future. These include an in-depth analysis of the patients sleep cycle, stress levels, chemical and toxin exposures and more. We then suggest changes that can help the body reduce inflammatory response. We also recommend aerobic exercises and resistance training on a regular basis. Similarly, an important lifestyle change that will reduce inflammation is controlling blood sugar and managing stress levels.
