What is ARA-290?

ARA-290, also called cibinetide, is an eleven amino acid peptide designed in a laboratory from a region of erythropoietin, the hormone that drives red blood cell production. It was built to keep erythropoietin's tissue-protective action without its effect on red blood cells, and unlike most peptides in this group it has been through small placebo-controlled human trials. Here it is prescribed after a free consultation and a review of your history.

ARA-290 benefits and uses.

  • Small-fiber nerve pain

Placebo-controlled human trials studied ARA-290 in people with small-fiber nerve damage and nerve pain.

  • Nerve fiber regrowth

In a 64-person trial, corneal nerve fiber measurements increased compared with placebo at the middle dose.

  • Tissue protection and repair

It acts on the receptor erythropoietin uses to protect stressed tissue, studied in lab and animal work.

  • 11amino acids, designed from erythropoietin
  • 64people in its largest placebo-controlled trial
  • 28 daysof daily dosing in its largest trial

How does ARA-290 work?

Erythropoietin protects injured tissue through a receptor complex different from the one it uses to make red blood cells. ARA-290 binds that tissue-protective receptor and not the blood-forming one. The receptor appears on stressed or injured cells, and activating it is thought to reduce inflammation and support repair, including regrowth of the small nerve fibers in the skin and cornea.

What does the research on ARA-290 show?

  • Human study

In a phase 2b randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 64 people with small-fiber neuropathy, corneal nerve fiber area increased at the middle dose compared with placebo. Culver 2017

  • Human study

A 22-person placebo-controlled pilot in small-fiber neuropathy reported it as well tolerated. Heij 2012

  • Lab study

In isolated human pancreatic islets, ARA-290 was studied for protecting stressed cells. Yao 2021

  • Review

A review describes the tissue-protective receptor ARA-290 was designed to activate. van Velzen 2014

ARA-290 side effects and safety.

  • Two small placebo-controlled trials reported it as well tolerated, with no serious adverse events attributed to the drug.
  • Red blood cell measures did not change in the trials, as designed.
  • There is no long-term human safety data.

The trial population was specific and the studies short, so ARA-290 is prescribed only after Catherine Seidle, APRN reviews your history, and your follow-up checks how you are responding.

Does ARA-290 work?

In a 64-person placebo-controlled trial, corneal nerve fiber measurements increased at the middle dose. The research base is small and comes largely from one investigator group.

Is ARA-290 safe?

Two small placebo-controlled trials reported it as well tolerated over 28 days. There is no long-term human safety data.

Is ARA-290 FDA approved?

No. It has never been approved, and FDA places it in Category 3 of its compounding list, substances nominated without enough supporting information.
